Cetus the Whale
Cetus the Whale is a fall and winter constellation in an area of the sky associated with water and water-related things. It is among the biggest constellationsâonly three cover more celestial ground than Cetus. Although it is not a zodiac constellation, the sunâs ecliptic passes very near its borders. Thus, planetary visibility within Cetus occurs for short spells.
Cetus also has the distinction of hosting Mira, the first variable star ever discovered. Mira at times is among the brightest stars in the nighttime sky, and on other occasions barely visible. The discovery of this star in the seventeenth century greatly contributed to the advancement of astronomy. Prior to detecting Miraâs mercurial behavior, science viewed the celestial heavens as unchangingâinvariable, as it were.
Cetus shares borders with Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Sculptor, Fornax, Eridanus, and Taurus. It also is situated a great distance from the Milky Wayâs plane and the obscuring dust therein, which cloaks innumerable deep-sky objects. Thus offering a very clear portal into the night sky, there are multiple faraway galaxies visible within Cetus.
